Buyer Safety Guide
Buying an animal is a bigger decision than a typical online purchase. These are the practices we recommend for every transaction on The Animal Traders.
Before you commit
Read the full listing, including health certifications and the documentation the seller has on file. Listings display document types — such as veterinary health certificates, registrations, pedigrees, or lab results — so you know what the seller can show you.
•
Message the seller through the platform and ask your questions there, so you both have a record of what was discussed.
•
Ask to see the documentation behind any certification that matters to your purchase.
•
For livestock, ask about herd health history and how the animal has been kept.
Meeting and inspecting
Sellers list a pickup area shown as a city and state; exact meeting details are arranged around the purchase. Inspect the animal in person before completing the transaction whenever possible, and consider having a veterinarian examine the animal — especially for higher-value purchases.
If you are buying across state lines, be aware that many states require a certificate of veterinary inspection for animal movement. Requirements vary by state and species, so check with your state's animal health authority before transport.
Paying safely
Keep payment inside the transaction you arranged on the platform: pay by card through checkout, or pay cash in person and confirm the sale with the confirmation code so the transaction is recorded.
•
Never pay by wire transfer, gift card, or payment app to someone you have not met.
•
Treat any request to move the conversation or the payment off the platform as a warning sign.
Red flags
•
A price far below the market range shown on our pages for that animal.
•
A seller who cannot show the animal live — in person or on a video call.
•
Pressure to decide immediately or to pay before you have seen the animal.
•
Sellers who only offer shipping and will not meet for pickup.
If something goes wrong
Report the listing or the conversation from inside the app. Reports go to our team for review, and repeated problems affect a seller's standing on the platform.
